Gestation period of a dog

Pregnancy in dogs, also known as the gestation period, typically lasts between 57 and 65 days, with an average of 63 days. When planning a breeding, it is important to record the exact date of mating. If there are two mating sessions, be sure to note both dates, and anticipate that the puppies will be born between 63 and 65 days later.

Healthy female dogs go into heat, or estrus, twice a year. They prepare for the challenges of raising puppies every six to eight months throughout their lives.

The first heat typically occurs between 6 and 18 months of age, with larger breeds often starting later. It's important to note that dogs can become pregnant during their first heat cycle.

As female dogs age, their reproductive cycles may become less predictable or more irregular. Unlike humans, however, dogs do not experience menopause and can remain capable of reproduction well into their senior years.

A pregnant dog doesn’t typically show physical signs of pregnancy until about day 40 of pregnancy. Around this time, her belly will begin to noticeably expand, continuing to do so for around three weeks. Her nipples will also enlarge and in the final week of pregnancy, she may leak milk.

Although your dog should be able to handle pregnancy and labour herself, being on stand-by to offer soothing words can put them at ease, and also allow you to step in should anything unexpected happen. You should also let your vet know so they know to be on stand-by.

Your pregnant dog will give you plenty of hints to let you know their labour is beginning and the pups are on their way.
